1066 is perhaps the most well known date in British History.
1066 was of course the year the Battle of Hastings took place.
In January 1066, Edward the Confessor lay on his deathbed and handed the Crown of England to Harold.
This is where the problems started. As although Harold was formerly crowned in Westminster Abbey by no less than two ArchBishops, the fact that the Pope refused to officially recognise the Royal Appointment meant that the Normans started their whispering campaign, which led to War.
The World famous Bayeaux Tapestry depicts all of the events from this period in 1066, along with Halleys comet, which was seen in the skies around the time of the coronation. This again played into the hands of the Normans, William and his followers based in Normandy, who said it was a 'prophecy of doom'.
